Edmonton Culture: Western Canada Fashion Week

When people think of Edmonton, the first thing they may NOT think of is fashion. But that does not mean that Edmontonions are not fashion conscious. In fact Edmonton is often chosen as the first location where international stores will test their brands and companies for expansion into Canada. This is because Edmonton is home to many large shopping malls, including the famous West Edmonton Mall. Along with big brand names such as Hugo Boss, Coach, and Apple, Edmonton has a strong history of supporting local fashion talent. You can find unique boutique stores all over Edmonton but especially in the Old Strathcona area as well as 124 street and 104 street. It’s in these local stores where you will probably see many of the designs features in this year’s Western Canada Fashion week which takes place every year here in Edmonton. Here local and international designers showcase their collections to enthusiastic audiences and potential buyers. It’s also a great time for UAlberta Clothing, Textiles and Material Culture students to get exposed to the fashion industry while still in school.

So when you come to UAlberta make sure to keep some of you schedule open so you can catch a fashion show or two in between classes!
