Inspired by the latest board we have on our pinterest page, I thought a blog post about the food you can get on and around campus was necessary! The University of Alberta is located in the perfect area being that it’s only a short 5 minute subway ride from downtown and short walk to Edmonton’s trendy Whyte Avenue which means there is never a shortage of stuff to do here or places to eat. In fact I freely admit that it seems all my free time is spent in one of the many trendy little restaurants that surround UAlberta, so without further ado here are some of my favorite places, in no particular order, to grab a bit to eat and hang out with friends in an around the University of Alberta!
- Sugar bowl
Located just off the University of Alberta campus, the Sugar Bowl, first opened its doors back in the 1940s and has remained a popular University hang out ever since. With its trendy warm atmosphere and amazing food like their delicious homemade cinnamon buns, their Smoked Paprika Popcorn, and their Red Curry Coconut Seafood Laksa, it’s not surprise that this little restaurant is always busy with students and professors grabbing a bit to eat and catching up with friends.
- Highlevel Dinner
Now I know I just said that the Sugar Bowl has delicious cinnamon buns, but I am going to tell you a little secret…The Highlevel Dinner cinnamon buns are even better! In fact the restaurant, which overlooks the Edmonton Rivervalley, claims that they make the best buns in Edmonton which is a pretty confident boast if you ask me, but they certainly live up to their claims. Trust me. Along with their cinnamon buns, they also offer a great Vegetarian Burger, Fresh Atlantic Salmon, and Thai Coconut Curry Chicken just to name a few things on their items. They also have an amazing view of the Edmonton skyline which makes your meal there all the more enjoyable.
Dewey’s on campus is the place to be seen at the University of Alberta; honestly it is rare the time I walk into Dewey’s and I don’t run into a friend who isn’t enjoying some sweet potato fries with a beer or playing pool at one of the six pool tables Dewey’s has. So stop by and take a break from school’s stresses—and enjoy the interesting artwork they have scattered all over the place.
- RATT (Room at the Top)
If Dewey’s is more of the artsy pub on campus then RATT, located on the seventh floor of the Student’s Union Building, is definitely the sports bar. It features 16 local and imported draught beers and also has an extensive menu with all kinds of interesting eats and the place is surrounded with plasma screen TVs where you can sit back a hockey game with friends. It’s also just a nice place to have lunch as Room at the Top boasts a stunning panoramic view of Edmonton.
- Upper Crust Café
Upper Crust Café boast an amazing selection of deserts and also has what I think, are the most delicious sandwiches ever. The restaurant is also one of my favorite places to hang out in based on atmosphere alone as it reminds me of the little cafes I ate at while I was travelling in Paris: not overly pretentious, but still classy.
- The Arbour Restaurant & Tea Room
Located in Rutherford House, the home of the first Premier of Alberta, Alexander Cameron Rutherford from 1911 to 1941 and nestled in the University of Alberta campus, the Arbour Restaurant provides a spectacular view of the University of Alberta grounds. The intimate and historical atmosphere is perfect for enjoying lunch and High Tea or afternoon tea alone or with a group of friends. With classics like cucumber and egg finger sandwiches and scones served with raspberry butter and Devonshire cream, it’s the perfect place to go if you want to be transported to another time and place.
