Long Weekend Stay Ins!

This October long weekend many UAlberta students will be leaving the city to either visit family or travel the beautiful Alberta province, but many students will also be staying in Edmonton and doing many of the wonderful things you can do in Edmonton during the long weekend. Here is out list of 6 things to do in Edmonton during the October long weekend:

1) Shopping:

Edmonton is famous for its amazing shopping scene because not only do we have North American’s largest mall in Edmonton, West Edmonton Mall, but Edmonton is also home to a number of different areas that offer unique shopping experiences like Whyte Ave and 124st. Check them both out for amazing and unique finds and help support local business owners as well!

2) Farmer’s Market (Whyte and Downtown)

There are a number of farmer’s markets Edmontonions can enjoy year round. Some of my favorites are the Downtown Farmer’s market which takes place in city hall and the Old Strathcona Farmer’s Market just right off Whyte. Go check them out for their delicious home-made goods and wonderful handmade crafts!

3) Museum Time

From the Art Gallery of Alberta to the Royal Alberta Museum to the TELUS World of Science, there are many options to choose from for the museum buff in all of us. One of my favorite exhibits that is on right now at the Art Gallery of Alberta is the “Automatiste Revolution: Montreal 1941-1960” which features 60 works of art, as well as photographs, books, and other ephemera documenting the history of the Automatiste, Canada’s first truly avant-garde art movement.

4) Watch some live sports

Edmonton is home to a number of professional and amateur athletic teams that you can go watch perform. From the Edmonton Oliers, Edmonton’s official national hockey league team, to the Oil City Derby Girls, which was actually the first Flat Track Roller Derby League in Canada and feature 3 house teams, there are many options for you to experience live sport in Edmonton.

5) Edmonton Corn Maze

The Edmonton Corn Maze offers many different events people can enjoy throughout the fall including their super scary “Farm of Fear” which runs until Halloween at the end of October and of course their regular corn maze which is guaranteed to keep you guessing until the very end….or until someone finds you!

6) University of Alberta Devonian Botanic Gardens

With over 190 acres to explore and various greenhouses, a butterfly hours, outdoor displays, and wonderful walking trails, the University of Alberta Devonian Botanic Gardens are the perfect way to spend a morning walking with friends or even just walking by yourself. The Garden is open until the first weekend of October which makes it the perfect way to say “good bye” to summer and “hello” fall as you walk the trails and enjoy the beautiful natural surroundings of the park.
