At UAlberta’s Office of Sustainability commitment to advancing the culture of sustainability has taken many forms over the years, but one of their most prominent events they host every year is “Sustainability Awareness Week”. During Sustainability Awareness week students, staff, and the Edmonton community come together and take part in a variety of activities that include things such as “Social Change Cafés”, where people from many different backgrounds come together and discuss topics relating to social and human issues, as well as a “Health Nuts Bake Sale” where people can buy a variety of baked goods, many of them healthier than the sugary stuff you buy at grocery stores. They even host an "Opportunities in Sustainability Career Forum" where students can listen to successful professions talk about their exciting careers in the field of sustainability. The office of sustainability isn’t the only UAlberta organization that has a major focus on sustainability, in fact one of my favorite UAlberta sustainability events is the bi-weekly famer’s market that takes place in the Students Union Building. The on-campus farmer’s market came about after students saw a need for accessible healthy, fresh food on campus. Some of the wonderful products that are sold at the Farmer’s Market include fresh breads, amazing soup mixes, organic wine and of course kettle corn. So when you come to the University of Alberta make sure to make time for sustainability week and join in the fun. See you soon!
