One of the questions we receive most often from prospective students is “what are the winters like in Edmonton?” So we bet you’re also wondering what there is to do during the colder months! There is a lot to do outside in Edmonton during any season and many Edmonton residents are active all year-round. However, for those days you don’t really feel like being outdoors, we’ve put together our favourite options for on-campus fun!
Have a creative day, right here on campus, by visiting the Fine Arts Building (FAB) Gallery. Exhibitions feature various types of design and fine art work by UAlberta students, faculty and staff, as well as contemporary and historical artists.
FAB Gallery is open Tuesdays-Saturdays and is free to visit.
Did you know UAlberta has 29 diverse museum collections? Some are used for research and teaching and others are put on display at their main gallery space. The main UAlberta museum space shows a mixture of fine arts, sciences, and humanities exhibitions. Indulge in some history, paleontology or local art at this location, conveniently housed in our downtown campus.
The museum is open Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, with optional donation for admission.
Experience a little drama, acted out by UAlberta students. UAlberta is home to world-class theatre facilities and boasts one of the best technical theatre programs. Six theatre productions are put on each year, so you have plenty of different types of performances to choose from.
Studio theatre tickets are $12 for students or $5 on preview nights.
Nothing is more Canadian than watching a hockey game! Cheer on your UAlberta Golden Bears (Men’s team) or Pandas (Women’s team) during any of their at-home games and really get in the team spirit.
UAlberta also plays competitively in 11 other sports, so there’s never a dull moment! UAlberta students receive free admission to any games.
LIVE BANDS AND MORE
UAlberta’s North campus conveniently has two live entertainment venues in the Student’s Union Building. The Myer Horowitz Theatre and Dinwoodie Lounge both host live bands, lectures, comedians, and more! Keep your eye on their event listings through the Student’s Union
There is also another large venue on campus called the Jubilee Auditorium. This theatre is not technically a UAlberta facility, but it sits right on campus, so UAlberta students get easy access to some of the most popular shows in town. This auditorium hosts major musicians, comedians, ballets, symphonies and musicals on a regular basis.
